Practising astronomy, you will often find constellations names under their Latin forms. These forms may be under the form of the plain Latin name, under the form of the Latin abbreviated name or under the form of the Latin genitive of the constellation. In Latin, the genitive is the case used to express a relation of belonging. Let's review some examples. "Canis Major" is the Latin name of the constellation of the Great Dog. "Canis" means "dog", "major" means "large, great". Then a Canis Majoris. "Canis Majoris" comprises the two genitive for "canis" and "major". a Canis Majoris means the star a of the constellation of Canis Major, the Great Dog. "CMa" as far as it is concerned is the abbreviated form of the Great Dog Latin name; "CMa" is the abbreviated form of "Canis Major". The abbreviation may also be used as the abbreviated genitive. In this case "CMa" stands for "Canis Majoris". a CMa (which reads a Canis Majoris) is the star a of Canis Major, the Great Dog

The English countries usage for naming constellations, generally, is by their Latin names. The more advanced the amateurs -and people writing for them- the less the Latin name is followed by the English name. That is that, according to your level of understanding of the science of astronomy, you may use: "Bottom left of Orion is found Canis Major, the Great Dog", or "Bottom left of Orion is found Canis Major" :-)
