Editor's choice fine picture: A 430 ft wide Martian crater
A 430 ft Wide Martian Crater. This large Martian crater, located in Meridiani Planum plains at Mars, was informally dubbed "Endurance Crater". It is part of NASA Twin Rover Opportunity's mission. Twin Rovers mission is a dual rovers NASA mission to Mars, which has as a target to look for a watery, life-hospitable environment at the red planet. Although somehow less wide than Bonneville Crater, a crater which was visited by Spirit, Opportunity's twin, Endurance Crater is much more impressive in that sense that it displays tall, deep slopes. The inset is showing a rover and a human at scale. Rocky layers may reach about 16-33 ft and some are seen here arranged into cliffs. Rover Opportunity landed inside a smaller crater, half a mile away from Endurance Crater. After extensive science there, Opportunity drove to Endurance. Evidence for a strong, lasting watery past was found at landing crater and scientists are further investigating the region for other hints. Opportunity team has not yet decided whether it will send the rover inside the crater. 18-20 degrees slopes at some places would not pose any trouble to let the rover down. Whether the rover might easily get out of the crater has still to be assessed however. picture © site 'Amateur Astronomy', based on a picture courtesy NASA/JPL/Cornell
