Editor's choice fine picture: Phoebe, Saturn's outer moon
Phoebe, Saturn's Outer Moon. En route to Saturn, ESA/NASA/Italian Space Agency Cassini-Huygens mission grazed Phoebe, largest of Saturn's outer moons, on June, 11th 2004. This satellite was chosen as a target as it was thought to be an ancient Kuiper Belt object captured by Saturn during formative years of the planet, hence providing an insight about planetoids upon which solar system built. Pictures taken during the flyby are leaning in that sense as they are showing a world probably mostly ice, coated with a thin dark layer. Such characteristics are pointing more to comets and outer system objects than to asteroids. Crater left is 28 miles in diameter (45 km) as slopes right are about 12-mile (20 km) tall. Cassini-Huygens is bound for a thorough study of Saturn universe as Huygens probe will dedicatedly parachute into Titan -larger Saturn's moon- atmosphere. Arrival at Saturn is scheduled next July, 1st (June, 30th EDT) as Titan mission is for January 2005. picture courtesy NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
