Editor's choice fine picture: Geological view at Opportunity landing crater
Geological View at Opportunity Landing Crater. This color geology map of sort at Mars has been taken by one of NASA Twin Rovers Mission. Two identical rovers are since January 2004 on tracks of a watery, life-friendly past on the Red Planet. Each rover is fitted with a variety of tools which allow it to explore and investigate the environment. This color view is from rover Opportunity which landed on Mars at a region named Meridiani Planum. View was taken by an instrument termed Mini-TES (Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer) which is allowing materials identification from afar: diverse colors match diverse rocks. Red and orange patches indicate where a material called "hematite" is. Hematite if one of the materials rovers came to Mars for. It is thought to form in a watery environment. Light fragmented patches are a rock outcrop. picture courtesy NASA/JPL/Arizona State University/Cornell
