Saturn, a Faraway World. Before a first close encounter at Titan, Saturn's main moon, on next October, 26th 2004, the NASA/ESA/Italian Space Agency Cassini-Huygens mission has been journeying along a preparatory orbit around the ringed planet, before beginning a thoroughful work at Saturn's system. It has been keeping on some general science about Saturn. This view is showing the ring and two moons. Janus (top left) is one of the small inner moons linked to the ring system, Mimas (bottom right) is one of the regular moons of Saturn. Both moons are on the far side of Saturn, that is far beyond the ring. The ring is seen here from the faint C ring (top right) to the A ring. In-between is seen the multi-hued B ring. The large dark band between the B and the A ring is the Cassini division as the black line in the outer part of the A ring is the Encke division. One of the first main science results from Cassini-Huygens is to have found that the ring is similar in composition to one of the regular moons of Saturn, Phoebe. Phoebe itself has been found a planetesimal, one of these ancient building blocks of the solar system, 4.5 billion years old. The ring might be a shattered such object. picture courtesy NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
