Editor's choice fine picture: Saturn's moons
Saturn's Moons. Saturn is surrounded by 31 moons. 8 of them are major satellites, 10 minor satellites, and 13 are newly discovered satellites -mainly mere rocks. Most of what is known about Saturn's moons was yielded by Voyager 1 and 2 missions which reached the ringed planet about 1980. More will be learned by NASA/ESA Cassini-Huyghens probe, now closing Saturn and expected to reach orbit on July, 1st 2004. Most of Saturn's moons are more or less cratered as Titan's surface is hidden to observation due to a thick atmosphere. Iapetus interestingly features a surface part dirty ice, part carbonaceous molecules. Titan is distinctly larger than any other Saturn moon. Titan will be better known as Huyghens probe will parachute on it as part of Cassini mission. picture © site 'Amateur Astronomy', based on pictures courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech
