The 9/11 Attacks as Seen From the International Space Station (ISS). This image is one of a series taken the day of the 9/11 attacks as the International Space Station was flying over the area of metropolitan New York City. It's showing the plume of smoke which is released from lower Manhattan, where the World Trade Center twin towers had been struck by two hijacked planes. At the time of the attacks, the International Space Station (ISS) was manned by the Expedition 3 crew which had launched in August 2001 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. Expedition 3 was composed of one U.S. astronaut -Frank L. Culbertson, Jr (Captain, USN, ret.)- and two Russian cosmonauts -Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Tyurin, as the mission was to received, in mid-September, the Russian Docking Compartment, an additional docking port to the space station. The control mission team had astronaut Frank Culbertson informed almost in real time of the events that were unfolding in the U.S.A in those tragic hours. The ISS, by chance, was near to fly then over New England. Culbertson took the opportunity to snap this view of the New York area. En ce 11 septembre 2001, l'équipage de la Station Spatiale Internationale était l'Expédition 3, qui avait décollé en août, empruntant la navette spatiale Discovery. L'équipage d'Expédition 3 était composé d'un astronaute américain -Frank L. Culbertson, un capitaine en retraite de l'US Navy- et de deux Russes -Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Tyurin.
