The Sombrero Galaxy. Here is the famed Sombrero Galaxy, or M104, or NGC 4594, a distinctive view among the galaxy's world, with its fuzzy bulge and its lanes nearly seen edge-on. The Sombrero has a unusually large and extended central bulge of stars, and dark prominent dust lanes that appear in a disk that we see nearly edge-on. Billions of old stars cause the diffuse glow of the extended central bulge. Close inspection of the bulge in the photograph shows many points of light that are actually globular clusters. Astronomers do not fully understand to what that specific aspect of the Sombrero galaxy is due to. It looks like the galaxy features a classical spiral structure as the exterior boundaries of it are forming something like a piling of gas and dust. That spectacular, external ring is harboring many younger and brighter stars. The very center of the Sombrero is thought to house a large black hole. The Sombrero Galaxy is located at the confines of the constellations Virgo, the Virgin and Corvus, the Crow. Dans le halo, de plus, peuvent se voir de nombreux amas globulaires. Les astronomes ne comprennent pas exactement à quoi est dû l'aspect particulier de la galaxie du Sombrero. Il semble que la galaxie ait bien une structure spirale mais que les bords extérieurs de celle-ci forment comme un empilement de gaz et de poussière. Cet anneau de poussière, spectaculaire, abrite de nombreuses étoiles plus jeunes et plus brillantes. On pense qu'au centre de la galaxie se trouve un trou noir de grande dimension.
