Mars is reaching opposition. Hence like at any such moment it is easier to observe, being closer Earth. Further more for this campaign, the opposition is a perihelic one, that is Mars will be about opposition at the same time it will be about its perihelion (closest to Sun on its orbit). Hence its closeness to Earth will be increased. Mars will reach an important 20.2" of apparent diameter and magnitude -2.3. In no case however, this perihelic opposition is as historical as was the one of 2003 when Mars reached its closest Earth since 60,000 years (and was 25.15" wide) nor is it as important as were the previous perihelic oppositions (Mars had reached 24.9" and 23.8" in 1971 and 1988 respectively). Such events occurs about three in a row each 17-19 years. This year is a good opportunity to look at Mars anyway as the planet, on the other hand, will be mostly well located at the moment of the opposition. The perihelic opposition occurs in the night of October 29th-30th as opposition strictly occurs on November, 7th 08:00 UT. Mars is approaching us by 42.9 million miles (69 million km). In 2003 it had come by a mere 34.8 million miles (56 million km) L'opposition périhélique de Mars (30 octobre 2005) DataIt's not before mid-September/beginning of October that Mars will become easily accessible, at any latitude, rising about 10 p.m.-10:30 p.m. local time. Until then the Red planet will have been morning star and then rising earlier and earlier months passing (see more details about Mars visibility according to the latitude). At the moment when it becomes observable at accessible times, hence at beginners e.g. Mars will already be at an important apparent diameter of 15.2-17.8" that is like the Red Planet appears during an usual opposition. It will be northern hemisphere winter and southern summer at Mars. For the afficionados, Mars is reaching 6" of apparent diameter by April's beginning as it will return to this apparent diameter on about March 22nd 2006. By the beginning of 2005 Mars is 4.2" and at magnitude 1.6. for more data about Mars in 2005 use Mars Accurate Data 2005 in the Planets section
On the other hand Mars is better placed this year for observation than in 2003. At the moment of the nearest, in the night of October 29th-30th Mars is high at all latitudes. It's in the southern hemisphere that the Red Planet will be relatively lower, remaining just above 40° however. New moon is on November, 2nd. It's a good year for Mars campaigners as well as for those who want to begin at Mars!
